The town of Bahir Dar is located 180km south of Gondar on the shores of Lake Tana in the north of Ethiopia . It came into prominence in the 18th C. as a commercial destination for trade caravans to and from Gondar and the surrounding area. Today, it is one of the most attractive towns in Ethiopia and serves as a celebrated tourist destination. It hosts the fabled Blue Nile falls, the beautiful highland Lake Tana and 14th-century island monastic churches.
Bahir Dar is one of the leading tourist destinations in Ethiopia with a variety of attractions in the nearby Lake Tana and Blue Nile river. The city is distinctly known for its wide avenues lined with palm trees and a variety of colorful flowers. It is also considered as one of the most beautiful, well planned, and safest cities by many standards, and in 2002 it was awarded UNESCO Cities for Peace Prize for managing to address the challenges of rapid urbanization.
Bahir Dar is situated on the southern shore of Lake Tana , the source of the Blue Nile (or Abay). The Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay) are located about 30 km to the south. The city offers a small daily market and a very extensive weekly market. There are many modern and traditional music clubs in the city. The city is home to Bahir Dar University . Ethiopian Airlines operates scheduled flights between Bahir Dar and the capital as well as with Gondar to the northwest. The city is equipped with an airport with paved runways. The city is also connected through roads (and buslines) to these cities. The most common and convenient way of traveling in Bahir Dar is cycling. Taxis also provide efficient transportation in the city.
